Significant figures (sig figs) are the meaningful digits in a number that contribute to its precision. They include all non-zero digits, zeros between non-zero digits, and trailing zeros in decimal numbers. They help express the precision of measurements.

Start from the leftmost non-zero digit and count all digits to the right, including zeros between non-zero digits and trailing zeros if there's a decimal point. For example, 0.00123 has 3 sig figs, 123.450 has 6 sig figs.

Significant figures indicate the precision of measurements and calculations. They help avoid overstating the accuracy of results and ensure that calculated values don't have more precision than the original measurements.

Identify the digit at the desired number of significant figures, then round based on the next digit: if it's 5 or greater, round up; if less than 5, round down. Replace trailing digits with zeros if necessary.
