WiFi Hotspot For Windows 8.1/8/7 using Command Prompt

Hi guys, Today I am going to show you how to create WiFi hotspot network without using any software’s within 2 minutes by using your command prompt in Windows 7 or Windows 8.1/8. In my previous articles, I showed you how to create a WiFi network on any windows PC or laptop using Connectify software. This method works well with all Windows versions 8/7/8.1. Windows 8 users just scroll down up to step 1.

If you using Windows 8.1 then you have two methods one is >> Create WiFi hotspot in Windows 8.1 Watch this video. You can follow the video method and the second method to turn on WiFi hotspot in Windows 8.1 is this article method.

Two methods are different. You can use any method in Windows 8.1 but for Windows 8 you should follow the article or other references given in the tutorial. If you don’t find the Internet Sharing option like in the below Video follow the below Command Prompt method or this Connectify method (this method is 100 percent perfect) for Windows 8.1. CMD method might not work some times.

This Command Prompt method is only for technical people like you. You may get some problems. I highly recommend the software procedure for everyone Where you can create a hotspot with few clicks. Most of the times you cannot access the internet in your mobiles using this method so my suggestion is to use this method. Anyway, you can give it a try for command prompt method. If you face any issues with this method try this one >>This is 1000% perfect to create a hotspot.

Step 1: To Create WiFi Hotspot in Windows 8,8.1, Windows 7 PC

First, you need to know that whether your PC hardware supports hotspot feature or not. To check this follow the instructions.

  • Open your command prompt in administrative mode(if you don’t know this post your comment I will tell you). Enter this command:::

netsh wlan show drivers

Create Wifi hotspot in windows 8.1If it shows “yes” as you can in the image you can create a WiFi hotspot in your PC. Go ahead you’re almost done. If it shows No you PC can’t create the hotspot. Don’t close your command prompt until I say close it because we need it again.

Step 2: To Create WiFi Hotspot Network in Windows Laptops

  • Enter the below command (your CMD must be open in administrative mode). Share to unlock the command.

netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=www.FastTechBuzz.com key=FastTechBuzz

  • Hit enter then you will see like in below image.If you see the image like below then you’re doing right.Now your hotspot is activated on your PC.

Create hotspot networki in LaptopHere FastTechBuzz.com is your WiFi name and FastTechBuzz is your password. You can change your password if you want.

Step 3: To Create WiFi Hotspot in Windows 8,8.1/7 Computers

This is to switch on the created WiFi network Again Enter the below command.

netsh wlan start hostednetwork

Press Enter >> now you will see the command prompt as below. Now can close your CMD if you want. your hotspot is created you can see it on your other devices.

Solutions for common WiFi Hotspot Errors in Windows 8.1/8:

  • If you are getting obtaining IP address in your TABLET or mobile (or)
  • Hosted Network couldn’t be started or Any other errors while creating hotspot please use the below method.
  • Create Hotspot in Windows with software

Step 4: Share Internet Connection in Windows 8/8.1/7

This is to share internet connection with other devices. For this

  • Click on windows button on your keyboard.
  • Then type Network and sharing as shown in below image
  • click on settings there highlighted with yellow then click on the red marked option.

After clicking on that red marked option you will see a window then @Left side top CLICK ON CHANGE ADAPTER SETTINGS then you will see a window like below where you can see the created hotspot name with Local area connection 13.
share wifi hotspotNext, choose your presently using internet connection (Here I am connected to the internet using my BSNL modem) and right click on it and open properties >> then go sharing tab >>choose Local Area network under Home Networking condition as shown in below image click on OK.hotspot command
Then click OK.You are done.

    • You don’t need to do it again.Just turn on your wifi in your PC then you can see your wifi hotspot in your mobile or other PC.Anyway once again open your CMD as administrator and only enter this command “netsh wlan start hostednetwork” without quotes.

    • please checkout the step 4 once again.If you want to delete that you can delete it just select and press delete.

  15. You misleading people in your STEP 4.
    What is the source of internet? In your case, looks like the device you are connecting to your laptop through that Virtual Hosted adapter.

  16. If you want to share your WiFi internet then you should go to your WiFi adapter sharing tab tick “Allow other” and choose Home Networking your virtual WiFi you just created (Local Area *** 13) .

    Basically, you have to right-click the connection that you want to share, click the Sharing tab, and then select the Allow other network…

    • Sorry to say Ankit that i have never seen like this before any way make sure you have the latest wifi drives installed in your PC.

    • This message indicates that you have not switched your wifi to ON. if you have a toggle wifi switch in your PC switch the same to ON and the method will work for you. I think Srinu has done a wonderful job with command prompt. Compliments Srinu.

    • You said that your system is automatically shutting down but this problem is not because of wifi hotspot.Please checkout recently installed software’s.
      If you want to delete created hotspot in network adapter setting select local area network 13 and just hit delete button.

    • This method is working on windows8.1 also. I have tried this in 8.1 and it is working fine. Anyway if you have any problems with this try connectify hotspot pro software but you should buy that or else you can find it for free in the internet.

    • In the second command command the text you have entered after KEY= command .In this case password for your wifi is FastTechBuzz.Don’t forget to like and share this tutorial.

      • Just delete the created hotspot in network and sharing setting. Delete local area connection 13 and restart your windows 8 or 8.1 PC . Please let me know whether this solution helped for you or not.

          • Delete all your existing connections and do the same procedure or else try another method using connectify. Search in our site for hotspot then u will see another article please try that.

    • Remove that connection and connect it again. Use connectify software to create hotspot. Search for connectify in our blog. Then go through that article.
      Every whoever having problems use that connectify method and don’t forget to help us ( share our article and like us).

    go to control panel>device manager
    click on ‘network adapters’
    go to ‘Microsoft Hosted Network Virtual Adapter’ …right click and make sure its enabled. that was the problem for me anyway. when i went to delete the hotspot i must have disabled it as well.

Hi, i am almost crying, my usb modem is not showing in default windows connections, was trying to create that hotspot from my laptop for like 10 hours, then finally i did it, but when i do it from command prompt, after my laptop restarts, i have to do everything from the first step again all the time, also if i use mypublicwifi program, it says that password is wrong, and even if i put my laptop to sleep and hotspot is still available it again changes my password to something that i dont know, only thing that helps is to go to command promt again and to set new password.       After I failed to get hotspot working by my efforts, I uninstalled every thing & down loaded the MyPublicWiFi & installed it. Once again the same problem is persisting. The hot spot is created. But the connection says no internet connectivity.
      I think that if you look at the web shots it may be easier for you to get a solution. Could you kindly let me know as to how can I send you the web shots?

    • Which OS are you using? 8 or 8.1 ? Anyway you delete the hotspot and create it once again then restart your PC if you face this problem again try softwares they will work fine.

    The solution for “my device say CONNECTED but I can’t use the internet” is:
    newIP = ip created by “netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=newNetwork key=Pass”
    – Add the newIP to your antivirus whitelist OR
    – Add/Allow this newIP to your antivirus zone configuration OR
    – easiest way: disable your antivirus network firewall (maybe also your win8 firewall).

    • Read the instructions properly. Go to windows search for command then you will see command prompt right click on it then at bottom of the screen you will see run as administrator option.

    • I had this problem and after reading many, many comments and trying everything, with no success at which that point I was nearly crying, I figured out that my WiFi was turned off, (hurr durrr) XD I just turned the WiFi on and re-pasted the [ netsh wlan start hostednetwork ] thing and it worked. Works great when I share my LAN however if I’m abroad and connect to the internet with a ZTE USB modem then I will not get internet over the WiFi Hotspot even though the connection is correctly shared with the USB modem and Internet Access type is shown for the Hotspot Local Area Connection* ##.

    I manually created the virtual hotspot on my tablet which is connected to Ethernet broadband (in a minesite camp with a lot of users) and on my phone I can see the network name but when trying to connect to it, it says ‘obtaining IP address’ for ages and then sometimes says network has been disconnected as it is too slow…is this just perhaps because there is congestion on the network (lot of users on after work) or is there a way to fix this problem?

      • Since I posted that, I installed my public wifi program and managed to successfully connect my android mobile to the wifi hotspot on my tablet (connected to ethernet internet) but the internet on the mobile didnt seem to be working even though the Wifi was connected as it wouldnt load pages, or Facebook etc. Do you know of any way of fixing this issue?

      • i used to have the same issue, just go to the device manager, in view tab press the show hidden devices, now go to network adapters, you should see (Microsoft hosted network virtual adapter ) it should be disabled, so you should enable it and rewrite in the cmd 🙁 netsh wlan start hostednetwork ). and it should now say: the hosted network started, hope that help.

    e requested operation”, it is because your network type is set at “private”, I can’t remember how I did it but somewhere in network settings you have to go to home group and allow sharing or something, or change your network type to home and allow sharing

    • Looks like you are sharing your internet connection using lan. You can’t share a single connection in both ways at a time. I am not 100% sure but that error message seems like that.

    I am using Windows 8. I successfully set up a local network and broadcast the network. The problem I am having is that when I try to modify the Ethernet sharing to include the local network, I cannot. The “Wi-Fi” is listed in the home networking connection bar and I cannot erase the words “Wi-Fi” and input the local area connection, therefor I cannot connect to the internet using the local area connection.

    I do not see the options in the ethernet properties that you have shown in your tutorial. All I see are the following: ‘Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection’ and ‘Allow other network users to control or disable the shared Internet connection’.

    Why can I not modify the home networking connection in the Ethernet properties tab? Am I missing a step? I accessed this tab by initially selecting the “change adapter settings” option. I feel as if I need to disable a security setting?

    • I just created a shortcut and now i can run this cmd (netsh wlan start hostednetwork) with one click, i think it resolved my problem 🙂
      1. On your desktop press right button of your mouse and click new shortcut.
      2.Type “netsh wlan start hostednetwork” without quotes, click next when enter your name of shortcut and click finish.
      3.Right click on your shortcut, go to properties, click more and mark run as administrator, click ok>>aply>>ok.
      4.Thats it, now you can pin your shortcut to start page or task bar.
      Hope that this advice will help someone, good luck 🙂

    first of all thanks for this wonderful tutorial 🙂 I followed all the steps and it worked.
    But there were some problems, my android device can connect to the wifi but the connection was very slow. I cannot even load facebook news feed.
    When I turn off my wifi ON MOBILE and on again (the wifi hotspot on laptop was always on/started) , the wifi on device always failed to obtain IP address.. So i need to restart the wifi hotspot again.. This happened since I accidentally disable the wifi hotspot and I did re-enable it..
    I have no idea what happened.. Please help 🙁
